OUTLINE OF NEEDS

BACKGROUND

The National Olmstead Network (NON) was founded in 2003 in memory of BRUCE, The National Olmstead Network (NON) was founded in 2003 in memory of BRUCE,

Everyday people like BRUCE become disabled and have no accessible home to go to (click on this link to read about how Bruce had to die because nobody caes
http://www.universalc.com/bruce.html )
. For this reason, and others, the
Congress of Disabled Persons Against Exploitation organization was formed. This is the funding arm for several different projects, including the Olmstead Network .

The Olmstead Network grew out of the
the  Olmstead Decision and Executive Order which, in order to place qualified individuals with disabilities in community settings whenever appropriate, "The United States seeks to ensure that America's community-based programs effectively foster independence and participation in the community for       Americans with disabilities." President Bush is leading the way in assuring that disabled and elderly Americans live in the best community setting by announcing the New Freedom Initiative on February 1, 2001, as part of a nationwide effort to remove barriers to community living for people with disabilities. On December 21, 2001, HHS presented President Bush with Delivering on the Promise: Preliminary Report of Federal Agencies' Actions to Eliminate Barriers and Promote Community Integration ,  thus allowing life, liberty and justice for all Americans.

OUR OLMSTEAD PROJECT

The Olmstead Project ( http://www.olmsteadnetwork.org/chiolmstead.html )  seeks to help the disabled and elderly persons live in their own neighborhoods where they choose. The only reason some disabled persons are forced into a nursing home is that they can't be thrown out into the streets as "able bodied" persons are. Instead, our society allows disabled persons to be warehoused in nursing homes where they live useless lives. Nursing homes have a great responsibility in the U.S. They must care for those of us who need 24/7 nursing care and for those who are too sick to live on their own in a community. Over the years, nursing homes have become big business (as did our entire health care system in the U.S.). Our nation, the most powerful in the world, has put a price on its human beings. Below is several cases of lives wasted away.

When Mayor Daley announced his 10 year plan to end homelessness, he said, "Every human being has a name and a face". Every human being was put on this earth for a reason. No one will ever have the same reason for living. How do we care for our own? THE CHICAGO OLMSTEAD PROJECT WILL SEE THAT PERSONS WITH WITH DISABILITIES AND ELDERLY PERSONS WILL BE ABLE TO LIVE WHERE THEY CHOOSE, AND WILL NEVER BE HOMELESS OR STUCK IN A NURSING HOME WAITING TO DIE. By Supporting all activities of the 5th Annual and beyond Disability Pride Parades, we help persons with disabilities, the Vets, and the elderly feel good about themselves. By providing housing for them, we give them the will to
live a productive life. Below is one true stories of what happens to human life when people don't care: There are more! When will it end?

THE STORE OF BRUCE:

• Bruce developed MS at the age of 30.

• His wife told him that she could not face being married to a “disabled man”. Therefore, she lift him, never to return.

• His mother and father tried to take care of him at home, but they did not like having his Personal Care Assistant around the house. They wanted to travel in their golden years, and were mad that they had to take care of their son.

• Upon hearing their cries, Bruce took many pills to end his life.

• Bruce was taken to a hospital where his life was saved.

• Bruce didn't want his parents to give-up their life plans just to take care of him.

• Bruce signed himself in a nursing home close to where his parents lived, and gave all his money to them.

• Bruce wasted away for 10 years in this nursing home to the point of not being able to move his body or cry for help.

• On a cold Sunday he was found in bed by a disabled person who was visiting. With a tube coming from his mouth, Bruce was throwing-up all over himself and could not call for help.

• The visitor looked all over the building for a nurse (Bruce's room was 10 feet from the nurses station).

• Bruce was taken to the hospital for 2 weeks until his medicare was used up.

• Bruce's mother wanted him back in a nursing home, and told the disabled visitor to; “Stay out of her business”.

• Bruce died 2 weeks later in the same nursing home.

• Bruce died along. His life was ended without dignity.

GOALS FOR THE
OLMSTEAD NETWORK PROJECT

  • Aid in training people to live in their own home instead of wasting-away in a nursing home. This will involve Olmstead Freedom Fighters who will have training in how to get independent living products and services to the consumers.
  • Conduct a  project to train homeless persons and first time offenders to become Olmstead freedom fighters Personal Assistants to assist the disabled and the elderly in daily living. These Freedom Fighters will have knowledge about products and services that will aid persons with disabilities and the elderly to live on their own. They will also visit nursing homes and institutions to find persons that would like to live on their own.
  • Support all activities of the 5th Annual Disability Pride Parade ---DISABLED AND PROUD in 2008 and beyond. By supporting  the parade, we will be able to raise money for our Olmstead Projects and give out info..
  • Purchase HUD (and other properties) homes in Chicago, and elsewhere, for the purpose of rehabbing them so that they are accessible and affordable to elderly and persons with disabilities
  • Train Olmstead Freedom Personal Assistant caregivers to aid disabled and elderly persons so they can live independently.
  • Build an Olmstead Network of service providers, builders and real estate agents to provide a  full range of  Olmstead Services.
  • Advocate the Olmstead Network to insurance companies, Medicaid and medicare for Olmstead Product support (http://www.universalc.com/oap.html  ). These products are sold through our Able Home Aideshttp://www.ablehomeaides.com/ ) division where 80% of the profit is used to fund the Chicago Olmstead plan (http://www.ablehomeaides.com/chiolmstead.html ) .
  • Build an Olmstead Freedom Training Center. Since Southern Illinois has one of the best campus for all types of disabled persons (even the most severe disabled like myself), their foundation may wish to help raise money for this center.
  • Develop a informational TV program for cable access channels and other news media. This can be used as a fundraising tool (I was approached by a paid cable producer who will produce a 30 minute TV show that we can use for fundraising, tainting, etc.
